Pierre Loti- Vies de deux chattes

Parce que c'est elle, parce que c'est moi, ah ah, mais aussi et entre autre parce qu'elle seule me connaît assez pour savoir m'offrir des livres.

A l'heure où je m'apprêtais à attaquer Ramuntcho, avant ma traditionnelle incursion pré-estivale à Hendaye, je tombai sur ce petit recueil pour moi parfaitement inconnu de Loti: Vies de deux chattes.

Drôle d'objet coquet aux Editions Aubéron, au graphisme épuré, au toucher doux, et à la couverture à l'étrange texture - de ce papier très glacé qui accroche la main: c'était le moment de lire cette histoire de chattes.

Chez Loti, nos Mimines, Moumounes et autres Minouches se nomment Moumouttes. Ou Mimi pour les petits. Religieusement, et invariablement.

Il nous conte ici la vie de Moumoutte Blanche, sorte de pacha quasi immaculée, et 1ère propriétaire en titre du nid de Loti. Puis, de Moumoutte Grise,  ramenée de l'autre bout de la planète par Loti le navigateur. C'est bien la première fois que j'entends l'histoire d'un chat né en Chine et débarquant au fin fond de la France en plein XIXème après avoir passé 7 mois en mer.....

S'ensuit l'histoire des deux moumouttes en France, autour de Maman et Tante Claire, écrite d'une plume très 19ème, mais qui scelle à jamais les deux chattes dans notre boîte à souvenir de personnages ineffaçables. 

De vraies vies de moumouttes passées entre les recoins du jardin, les bobines de fil et les boîtes à broderie, à lézarder sur un mur ou lovées en boule au coin du feu.

Pour moi, les deux chattes ont remplacé Pêcheur d'Islande ...en attendant de lire Ramuntcho. Et je préfère les imaginer dans la maison basque de Loti à Hendaye qu'à Rochefort ou Oléron.

Pourtant, le recueil contient aussi d'autres nouvelles, dont le très court Une bête galeuse. Loti y décrit la décrépitude et la mort avec une humanité que bizarrement seul un chat peut incarner. En trois ou quatre pages il peint la fin de vie d'un réalisme plus criant que s'il avait parlé d'un homme. D'ailleurs, il ne parle même pas d'un chat, mais d'une bête- qui s'accroche envers et contre tout au dernier rayon de soleil, au dernier souffle d'air chaud, au dernier regard. On en ressort sidérés et tourneboulés, avec chacun sa propre bête galeuse au fond des yeux.  

Définitivement un incontournable de la "littérature féline".

Just as I was planning on tackling Ramuntcho, before my traditional and yearly foray into the Basque country, I came across this small book I had forgotten about , by Loti: Lives of two cats

I have a delightful French edition, but found on the internet THE ( American) English one: a very old edition, dating from 1900ish, published in Boston by Riverside Press, featuring black and white drawings by some obscure Allen, and displayed at a wonderfully ridiculous price at Bromer booksellers

Illustrated with black-and-white drawings of the two cats by C.E. Allen. No panic, though, you do not need to spend such an amount of money to read the book: you may actually browse through it for free on this site, though i have no idea whether it it a good idea or a real shame ( considering the said site was claiming a few days ago that "proposed EU copyright measure threatens the internet"....

Now, it was about time I read about these two cats.

Loti used to invariably call his cats "Pussy", and Kittens "Kitty". Makes sense, when you come to think about it.

Here is the story of  Moumoutte Blanche, some sort of immaculate pacha , and first official cat dweller at Loti's nest. Then  Moumoutte Grise, brought back from the other end of the world by Loti the sailor. It is possibly the first time I have heard about a cat born in China and being brought back to a French mid-19th middle of nowhere after spending 7 months at sea....

Then comes the story of the two pussies in France, with Mum and Auntie Claire- written in a very 19th century way, though imprinting the two characters of the cats forever in our minds.

True lives of pussies, spent hiding away in garden corners, sprawling among spools and embroidery boxes,basking on a wall or curled up by the fireside.

Definitely a must read of  "feline literature"....
