Or, à aucun moment je ne me suis ennuyée.
There was Amelie-san in Fear and Trembling, Orelsan on the radio/ on my blog/ on TV: now, there is Lady Aurel-san.
Lady Aurel-san lives in a house in the mountain with lawn running like a red carpet all the way up to the entrance door
Lady Aurel-san does not have any guard dog: just chickens.
Lady Aurel-san is an expert in lots of things: stones and rocks and the ground, for a start; and some incredibly unlikely (and loud) music instrument; also, schooling and children.
Lady Aurel-san actually does know how to make great children to . So she does.
On top of that, she can also sew, embroider, live in the country, smile, enjoy life as it is, make things, recycle, cook, create, imagine and....pick wild garlic ( "bear garlic" in French is much nicer though)
Lady Aurel-san can do scads of things.
But as there is ALWAYS something everyone is less good at , Lady Aurel-san asked me to knit THE thing she had been dreaming about for years: the cuty leafy jumper from 100 idées ( an extremely famous French creative magazine from the 70's). I was EVER so proud.
This very one. With the leaves and thingamajig on the sleeves and cable-stitched borders. The whole thing. I am certain this here jumper is still causing nightmare AND wild dreams to people who tackled it back in the 70's.
So, greatly flattered, mightily curious, I said Yes. Course. I mean, i had never knitted leaves to begin with................
BUT! Lady Aurel-san thought this was becoming a little bit too much a lot easy. So she opted for some superb yarn from Drops.... miles away from the original one...... actually, much thinner.... So i had to callllcuuuulatttte. My brain almost burst. Into tears
Baby Alpaga silk, grey blue, with "mulberry silk" (is that class or what???)
Once i had worked it all out, I tackled the leaves, thingamajig and cable stitch. It turned out to be splendid, and not that difficult in the end, but mostly magically rewarding : i felt I had turned into a true artist ( one thing I am definitely not, except when it comes down to choosing chocolate)
Which was just as well, since knitting the jumper took me .....5 months. 5 months....five months.....I mean, not 5 months knitting the thing, then putting it away, then forgetting it, then taking it up. No. Five full fool bloody months. Everyday, every night. One centimetre a day ( no i am not turning that into inches, i've done enough counting for a whole year). 2 centimetres on exceptional days. 3 cm in case of heavy rain. Which was fine, since it rained buckets.....
Then, i got to the much-awaited last sleeves. Top part. Just before the last decrease.Almost there..... EXCEPT.... I realised I had made a mistake right in the middle of the sleeve. A whole row in stockinette without cable stitch. You could see it with closed eyes. So i took 15 pictures ( just to keep my brain busy in front of such a great turmoil)
...... I undid half of the sleeve, and knitted again.......
Then, it had to be sewn. Hate it.But this yarn was so magic it was actually quite pleasant.
Then i had to knit the collar with a magic loop. Up i knitted. Bind off. Collar too narrow. Undo. Knit again. bind off again.
Please, do tell me you want to see the thing NOW!!!!!You do, don't you? Let's goooo!
5 months toiling away..... i even had to stop knitting my own jumper. But believe it or not, i was sad when it was over.
First, because i love knitting for the people I love. And this time, it was Lady Aurel-san!
Then, because without her, I would never ever have chosen this yarn, this pattern, this jumper. In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed knitting it, every single moment of it.
the back!
The result came as a real surprise: here is quite a "heavy" jumper, though not "weighty" and definitely not chunky; free-flowing and loose-fitting enough though never baggy ; with a great elasticity without sagging; and this yarn will not bobble. It is a timeless, year-round jumper ( except in mid-summer Southern France of course....), like a second skin. A good old " breathing" long-lasting handknitted jumper.
An explosion of autumn leaves.
